A Pocket Full of Murder

(no subject)

I've just realized that in less than a week, Simon (my youngest son) will be one year old. Wow, it only seems like a couple of months ago that I was in AIM chat with Cally and Teri, telling them I'd just started having contractions...

Simon isn't walking unaided yet, though he's an accomplished crawler and cruiser. What he is doing, however, is talking. He started with "Mama" and "Dada", of course -- that's nothing unusual for his age, especially as he didn't seem to know or care which of us was which. But now he's definitely beginning to discriminate. Plus, for at least two weeks now he's been saying "Kee!" and pointing to the cupboard where the cookies are kept. Yesterday I took a banana off the counter and began to peel it for his lunch, and he pointed to it and said "Ba-na!" And the other day we were at the playground and a neighbour's cat trotted over, whereupon Simon stretched out his arms eagerly and chirped "Ca!" He's also pestering us to identify things -- "Whassat? Whassat?"

My mother says I was talking in full sentences by fifteen months. I doubt Simon will make it that far (and I confess to a certain skepticism about my mother's memory on that score), but he definitely does seem to have a love of language and a gift for mimicking sounds. Nicholas, our oldest, has always been a little chatterbox as well, but he's much more interested in taking things apart and seeing how they work. It's fascinating to see the two boys developing and excelling in different directions...
