Post a page number, get a line from QUICKSILVER!
It may or may not be something to be proud of, but I passed 20K tweets today. I have also very recently finished the copyedits for the US edition of Quicksilver, the companion novel to Ultraviolet, which is something to celebrate as well. So I am having a bit of a Twitterbration. And I am extending it to my LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, Tumblr and Facebook subscribers, too!

Here's how you play:

1. Leave a comment with a number between 1 and 314.
2. I will reply with a line, or maybe even a whole paragraph if I feel like it, from that page of Quicksilver.

And that's all! Comment away! Or you can play on Twitter, where I'm @rj_anderson and the tag is #Quicksilver.

ETA 12/10/19: Contest is closed! Thanks for playing.

Oh, tricksy we are!

"And if you say anything more about being unfit to clean our mildew-infested grout or whatever, I’m going to smack you upside the head..."

I’d hoped that my first impression of him had been wrong, and that somewhere behind that smug facade he still had some sense of decency and compassion, or at least shame.

As we walked, the sun disappeared behind the clouds and the wind swirled along the sidewalk, kicking up little tornadoes of grit and paper scraps. The empty storefronts suddenly looked menacing, dark windows staring us down, and the scattered tattoo parlors, bars, and used bookshops were no better. I pulled my dad’s coat around my shoulders.

Not that we were blood relatives, or at least I hoped not. We certainly looked nothing alike. But then, I had no idea who my biological parents were...

“No. I mean, don’t joke about that stuff. Straitjackets and padded rooms and—” I closed my eyes, seeing Alison’s white, strained face in my mind. “Just don’t, okay?”

“He asked me to give you this,” my mother added softly, and pressed something into my upturned palm.

Aaaaand you hit the jackpot:

Sebastian raked a hand through his hair, silvery roots glimmering in the semidarkness. For several seconds he was quiet. Then he said, “Has she written back to you yet?”

I love it! So when, exactly, can we get our hands on Quicksilver in the U.S.?

It will be available mid-to-late February -- the official pub date is March 1st 2013, I believe.

Alas, the contest is closed now! But I hope you enjoy the other snippets I posted. And I'll probably do this again closer to the publication date.
