Last week, three-year-old Nicholas discovered that among some hand-me-downs from an older cousin was a nattily patterned clip-on tie. He was excited to see that it looked "just like Daddy's", and desperate to wear it. So we promised him that we would find him a nice white dress shirt and he could wear the tie to chapel.
Well, we found the shirt, and dutifully clipped on the tie, and Nicholas was enormously proud and pleased with his new, businesslike self. He examined his new outfit in the mirror, then turned to me, puffed out his tie-adorned chest and announced,
